In the "Lazarus" video ( Blackstar, 2016) Bowie has gone back into the closet, as it were (or at least the wardrobe), re-emerging (in the "Blackstar" video) on a world where the jewel-encrusted skull of the astronaut (Major Tom?) is lovingly preserved and worshipped by the women of that world as a relic of whom? Mythologically and psychologically, analytical psychologist June Singer notes, the archetype of Androgyny is second only to the archetype of the Absolute, which to Singer is unknowable (June Singer Androgyny: Toward a New Theory of Sexuality. Bowie's Androgyny (and the archetype of Androgyny in general) should not be interpreted literally in simple sexual terms. David Bowie and the personae he created were certainly that. Marcel Marceau will be remembered as Bip the Clown Jean-Louis Barrault will always be Baptiste (Barrault's character in Marcel Carné's 1945 Les Enfant du Paradis).

I think we, the audience perhaps thought/wanted to think Bowie actually was the personae he will be remembered for. He will also be remembered for the personae he created to deliver that music. Bowie will be remembered for his evocative, often poignant music and lyrics.


Bowie studied acting and mime with the great French actor, mime artist, and teacher Etienne Decroux (1898–1991), who was also Marcel Marceau and Jean-Louis Barrault's teacher.

The public thinks of Bowie as a rocker he was also an actor and a mime. David Bowie (1947-2016) will be remembered for his music and his acting.
